A: The crankshaft sensor is usually located in the timing cover or near the bottom of the block, toward the front of the engine. Note, however, that the word “usually” is a big one here. The GM 5.3L engine family has the sensor at the rear of the crankshaft, for example, so that the starter has to be removed to access it.

3. Unclip the wire connector and remove it from the sensor. First, pop out the red tab on the side of the sensor with a small screwdriver or similar tool. Then, squeeze the base of the wire connector (where you see the wires going in) and pull on it to unclip it from the sensor.
